It isn’t common for a 600 motor to blow but some do.
The timing in the 2007 500ss was advanced to meet emission regulations and in doing so they caused a lean mid throttle condition that was melting pistons, a slight adjustment to the carb and their fine.
Regular inspection goes a long way, have a look for delaminating carb boots, cracked Y pipes, do a leak test annually.
http://www.dootalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=258932I bought a used 2007 600 sdi with about 2500 klm on it, after a few rides the motor blew. It turned out that the PTO side, inside seal popped out of its bearing, broke and went into the crank case, then traveled up through the transfer port and got on top of the piston, messing up the piston and cylinder pretty bad.
If I had performed a leak test after I purchased the sled I would have likely found the bad seal before it broke and went through my motor. Lesson learned!
This is what is left of the seal
