Hi,
I'm going to look at and maybe purchase a 2003 SUV 600 tomorrow. He is asking $3000.00. The machine has 4600 miles on it. He told me that some rear suspension parts have been replaced. He replaced them because they were craking and he said he could of welded it but the parts were cheap so he just replaced it. He also mentioned that the machine was used for checking trap lines through out Alaska he's also the orignal owner. New windshield and there is four small tears in the seat.
What are some prone problems with this machine? Over heating? etc....
Does anybody know what the compression should be?
Has anybody or can you install the V800 fan and rad on the 600?

Thanks for the info.

Mike,

Here's why the rad+fan won't work for that application:

The Skandic SUV on the Yeti chassis was one of the best utility sleds built by BRP. Although the comfort level of this chassis was not quite at the level of the Yeti II, it had better deep snow and maneuverability traits. Many features put the SUV above previous offerings from BRP:

(1) Mtn Bar
(2) RCG rear skid
(3) Higher seat and riding position
(4) Twin-bulb headlamp

The rear skid was definitely the biggest improvement over previous offerings.

4600mi should be a joke for the engine, ideal compression is around 120psi, anything better than 105 is not too bad, engine will still run at 100psi, but you're looking for a rebuild by that time. The standard 593 engine in the SUV was a reliable, strong and fuel efficient engine; it's now called the 500SS in some of BRP's current sleds and has been in the lineup since 1999. Cooling is no different for this engine than it is for any other Rotax liquid cooled twin. If you're running on bare ice or crusty snow (i.e. late Spring, early morning frost) you will need a set of ice scratchers, that's all.

Biggest concern here is the gearbox. Ask him if he has ever had the brgs replaced and test all gears before buying. A rule of thumb for Skandic/Expedition owners is that the gearbox brgs should be replaced every 10000km's or so (6k miles ish). This gearbox is worth more than the sled most times, so inspect it and if you buy it, get ready for the 6000mi rebuild at your dealer.

$3000 USD is a steal. A replacement seat cover from a good upholstery shop will run you $100.

Today went over there to look at the machine. It has 125psi compression in both cylinders, bearings have not been changed in the gear box, rear suspension has been rebuilt with new parts, seat is ripped, backrest leans to one side (indicating a roll or laid on it side), left trailing arm has been broken and rewelded, oil light stays on with oil in the reservor, hand warmers work, gear case works, cowling had a gun strapped to it so the cowling got hot and kind of deformed the it, steering post looks straight, tub and tunnel look straight, summit skis are installed, track looks good and the gear case oil looks like it needs to be changed. Drive shaft bearing has been replaced also. Tell me what you guys think.

Couple more pictures.

He also told me that he would take $2800 for it.

She's salvageable, no major damage. Rack and backreast steel can be fixed with a sledge hammer, but that rear skid looks to be a little too high...? Check that out.

Update:

There was a couple of Skandics for sale up here in Alaska. Some are $3000 from new with 5000 (or more) miles on them. Some are beat to "edit for bad language" and their asking high dollar. So I said screw it. I went out and bought a new Suv 550f. I did not want to buy another man’s junk! Couple of the skandics I looked at (with high and low miles) had been submerged in water, rolled, twisted tunnels etc.... Some of the machines didn't even have gear lube in the transmission. One had water!

I went with the fan for low snow conditions, running on river ice for miles on end and the few extra pounds in weight I saved. I would like to install a tach. Anybody got the part number or is it impossible to do? Also where can I get a complete wrap around bumper and a dash bag. I looked at the Lynx accessories catalog but didn’t understand the machines. I did see bumpers though.

Sorry for the bit__en!

Good pick, great sled. Get yourself a pair of ice scratchers now to cover you in the low snow conditions and you're all set.

The tach should be the same as that of the Pre-2009 Expedition 600HO SDI: P/N 515176478

Unscrew the ring, put in tach, plug in connector... very easy.

Ok, right on.
What about a bumper?
I would also like to install LED rear lights.
Thanks,

I have yet to see a nationwide-available wraparound bumper for the front end, but I will gladly give you the coordinates of a fabricator here in Labrador City who does a fabulous job on them. Shipping to Alaska would no doubt be tough, but it's up to you. He built the one that is on my sled, I will assume you have seen a pic of that on here somewhere.

I also installed an LED rear lamp with a how-to on here, did you catch that? There were a LOT of nice suggestions in that thread, some really nice ones were from a marine application, were circular and could mount right in your tail lamp lens very easily, tie it in with you brake lamp filament and voila, engage the park brake and your lamps are on.

Here's the thread: http://www.dootalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...8027&hl=led

Mine was really easy, the SWT has a 12V socket in the rack which is switched on the handlebar wink.gif

And here's your scratchers:

Thanks,

I think that I'm going to build a bumper. If you got any pictures avaiable of the bumper please email me @ m_jill23@yahoo.com.
Here are some pictures of the Cabin Beer Hauler I built last year. It needs ski skins. This is the first time that I hooked it up to my Suv.
Thanks.

That's the best use of a Cat front end I've seen to date!

Yeah, well, if you built that diamond plate aluminum sled you'll have no problem with a custom bumper! Very nice.

Looks like you got the new sled from CC? Didya get a good deal?

After fighting with them about shipping and setup fee I maid out ok. Homer looked to have the best deals around. There selling machines right at MSRP (the MSRP posted on skidoos website). CC wanted about $900.00 OVER the MSRP!

I would like to see other bumper designs so I ccan see where people tied into the tub at. No big deal on the bending and welding part.
Thanks,
