Full Version: Just imported a pair of sleds, question on registering

I bought a pair of REV 800s from the seattle are and brought them in last night. I didn't have to go through the "export" process at the US side, even though I stopped and told them I bought the sleds.

After paying the 12% tax on them at Canada customs, I'm a little hard pressed to pay the $200 RIV fee... Just wondering how important it is to get the BC numbers on the sleds for riding .. are there cops that check these things at trail heads ? They do have the US tabs on them ..

Basically, why would I go out of my way and spend another $200 to register them ?

RIV will come after u and make u export them back to the U.S. if u don't do their process(have imported and had problems even after paying them for not getting sled inspected) plus bomby is charging 300 bucks for recall letter if u didn't get one yet(need one to finish RIV process for each sled) have imported from the U.S. and had buddies do it too they will get their money.
good luck

I find that EXTREMELY hard to believe .. that they would make me export them back to the US .. what does that mean anyway ? make me sell them to someone in the states? drive them over the border and leave them there ?

Also $300 for a recall letter is the biggest rip off of the century .. I sure hope noone's every paid a dime for recall letters. I've always gotten them for FREE for my boat trailers. I also got the same letter for free on the sleds from a dealership.

I think it's silly for RIV to charge $200 for something that will not be driven on the road or get insured

anyways .. I guess we'll see smile.gif

So you don't plan on registering them?

I do want to register them .. I just think paying RIV $200 is a rip off on something that will not be on the road and doesn't need insurance.

I'll see how long I can get away with riding it with it's US numbers on it I guess.

Does the $200 fee go towards trail systems, or is it straight into the provincial pocket?
japedo

Im not sure what the regulations/bilaws are in your area but in new brunswick u must have it registered to purchase a trail pass. And to legally drive on the provincial groomed trails u must have a trali pass, insurance, registration, lisence plate and a valid drivers lisence all on hand to show the offroad enforcement should they request it.
I do agree that it is a pain in the "edit for bad language" And ive never ran into them on the trail.

option B = wave at them on the way by, I doubt a bearcat will catch your 800 revinmotion.gif j/k

Unfortunately it goes straight into the federal pocket and has nothing to do with the trail systems. It's the same $200 you pay if you import a vehicle, trailer, anything that is on the roads and needs insurance. It's basically the fee for federal inspection. You take it to canadian tire for that and what do they do? look at the vin, look at the other sticker, stamp stamp, thank you.

I've done it 4 times with the boat trailers i've imported and it's ridiculous.

But boat trailers need license plates and insurance from ICBC, so that's somewhat understandable.

They don't require this $200 on boats or dirtbikes or sea doos .. why on sleds ?

I just got an imported sled,, alot better deal than I would have got locally. If you cannot justify paying 200$ on a sled u got a good deal on how are u going to afford to run it?
I agree it's a stupid government policy that makes no sence, but most government policy's don't and we have gottwn usto them.

Maybe u should have baught your sled in b.c or researched the process before iniating it. Tons of info out there and now u know the facts.

lol .. im all about saving money .. and I don't mind paying fees then they make sense (i.e. RIV fee on cars / trailers that require insurance) .. but just because "we're used to it" doesn't mean I can't b*tch and complain about unnecessary fees.

it's like that other thread about recall clearance letters where BRP is charging $300 a pop for. That's outrageous too... Luckily I had the dealer in WA print me off a letter for free.

You can b*tch about unnecessary fees. but your thread topic reads otherwise. Something about a question on registering an imported sled. Oh ya thatt 200$ is part of the process. Unlikely a canadian/usa customs officer is going to pipe up and eplain it to us.

Skidoo's require insurance on the east coast.

Out here on the west coast , you don't NEED to reg. them. I have never been asked once, ever. It's differenent out east where things are more organized with the sledin nation. Out here sleding isn't a big thing. I know lots of people that don't reg. there sleds, and they don't plan on doing it either. Aslong as you pay your club fee's you're good. just another benifit of livin on the west coast.
