Hello All ,

I have bought my newphue a 1998 miniz. Had to clean up the carb to get it started. Now is running desent.

The issue I am having is the governor return spring. I have the Governor Rod hooked up to the governor arm with the governor return spring around the governor rod also hooked up to the governor arm and to carberator. When I hook up the governor return spring it is engaging the carberator. The return spring seems to short, it pulls the carberator open causing the clutch to engage.

It runs pretty good without the return spring, but the idle is a little to high and clutch is engaging. So have to fix this up before 5 year old nephue gets it for christmas...

Have thought of putting a differnt retrun spring in to pull the governor arm back to keep the idle solid. When this is done it works, but would prefer to do it correctly.

thanks for you help..

doo you have the gov. return spring hooked to bracket? Then add a plastic zip tie to gov. spring for 4-5 MPH more then the stock 8

Problem could be with the clutch engaging at too low RPM. The aftermarket clutch from Royal Distributiong works great and its only $73.00

Jshepard! Could you explain the zip strip in more detail, or maybe send me a pick. I am interested in some additional speed for my 2007 mini-rev.

Thanks

Do it the right way and buy a new spring. http://www.recmotor.com/products/honda-gov...0-200-engines-/

feed the zip tie through the spring loop it over and zip it so the spring does not stretch. what is the right way? I eliminate the governor completely , but the zip tie has been in the kits for sometime and no issues I know of.

If you do it that way, so the spring can't stretch at all, the engine could over rev and have a piston hit a valve. Rec sports has a replacement spring that will still allow the motor to rev higher than stock, but will keep it from over revving for $15. As long as the zip tie doesn't disengage the governor completely I'm sure it will work. If you have a bigger kid riding it most likely it would be fine even if the governor is bypassed, but a kid that is really light could cause a problem with the governor bypassed.

So will this spring alone get us some more MPH?

Yes it will it a few more miles per hour, and then as your kid gets bigger and wants to go faster, you can re-gear to get it up to 15 mph. I don't have a mini-Z. We have a polaris 120 that I installed a 6.hp robin engine that has a bit of work done to it, and it goes 24 mph on ice. I think that the polaris is the slowest chasis of the three manufacturers. Mainly due to seemingly have much more rolling resistance than Doo, or the Cats have. I will say though I have had the snowmobile since 03, and I switched motors, and added the rest of the mods in 05, and it has been trouble free.

not saying you are incorrect, or if I have been very lucky. I have not had piston to valve clearance issues while eliminating the gov. maybe cause most are geared up and load the motor harder TgC_emoticon142.gif .

JShepherd - Thanks for posting this procedure from Sportech! This probably just saved me a ton of money, I had the zip tie pulled tight so it was over-reving. Took the zip-tie off and followed the procedure above, and it's still getting me a ton more track speed without over-reving.

Nice picture! Congrats on the win!

I'm not sure what I'm getting for RPM's, I need to find out. Do you use anything for sliders or hifax when running on grass? I have the wheel kit for the rear, and the wheels for the front like in your pictures, but I get a lot of track "hop" when I'm not running on the snow. When it's on snow and the rails get nice and wet, it's fine. Tension is spot on, so I'm not sure if I need to fabricate some slides or what. Do you do anything for sliders?

Got the spring from REC and installed it, seems to have a couple more MPH in her now.

My little guys only 4 so this should work for this year.............but I will have to get more out of her next year for sure!!!!!

I bought my mini Z used with the rec motors spring already installed in it. I bought a stock governor spring and added the zip tie (as outlined above) to bypass the governor, and it makes quite a difference from the rec motors spring. Once your little guy gets older and bigger, you might want to try switching it out to get a little more speed. My son is 6 and has been riding for 2 seasons, this will be his 3rd, so I needed the extra RPMs and track speed.

Next step - a 300cc Eliminator from Premier. I saw them at Novi and talked to the owner for quite a while, and I think we'll give them a try.

Good idea, but doesn't that collect a lot of dirt/grass/gunk? Seems like it would be a nightmare to clean after a ride or two.

nothing that a little 409 or super clean doesn't clean off. Its really not that bad.
