Here is the lastest on the Oregon Trail (C4 between Wells and Thurman) Project:

*33 of the 50 Segments of the project have been completed.
*6 miles of trail have been brushed and improved.
*The WORST sections of trail have been addressed
*The Longest walking is over
*602 man hours in 7 workdays
*29 volunteers have participated
*A good turnout last weekend!

DEC Forester Tate Connor has been impressed with the results so he has scheduled another weekend work date for Sunday, September 27th, meeting 8AM at the Cod Pond Parking Lot on Route 8. Directions: After you pass Wells northbound on Route 30, turn right onto Route 8, cross the Sacandaga River Bridge, then continue approximately 9 miles until you reach the Cod Pod Parking Lot, which SHOULD be well marked with signs.

WHO WE NEED:

HEAVY CREW MEMBERS: We need many people to perform the grunt work of digging, stump & boulder removal. This is the backbone of the Oregon Trail project. We've got plenty of hand tools for the job, we just need the men to use them!

BRUSH SAW OPERATORS: Sections of the trail are overgrown with thick brush. We need brush saw operators to hack a path through the jungle. You need a hard hat and eye & ear protection to operate a brush saw on State Land. I'm not positive whether a first aid kit is required, but it would be a wise idea to bring one along. You'll need to bring your own brush saw and safety gear.

CALLING ALL CHAINSAW OPERATORS! We only had one chainsaw operator show up last weekend, making it a very long weekend for him. The requirements for operating a chainsaw on State Land are quite strict. Please call DEC Forester Tate Connor at 518-623-1278 to review the requirements. There are many fallen trees on the trail. If you are a New York State Certified Chainsaw Operator, we need you here on September 27th!

If you are planning to help out on Sunday, September 27th, please contact DEC Forester Tate Connor to RSVP. This will help better coordinate and plan our efforts, so your volunteer time is the most productive. Tate Connor can be reached at 518-623-1278 or tmconnor@gw.dec.state.ny.us . Please include your name, phone # and the confirm the date that you want to work. All work will be done on foot, so remember to backpack your food, water and other necessities to last the day.

Snowmobiling in the Adirondacks is in a fight for survival. Our work on this trail is making a statement to DEC and it will put us on a better footing against anti-snowmobile environmental groups that wish to shut us out. We need to show up in great numbers for this project so we can get the job done. I promise we won't run out of tools, labor or room to work!
