Full Version: Oil Oops?

I'm pretty sure I've messed up but I'd like a second (or more) opinion.

At the end of the season I topped off my oil with 2 Stroke XPS Synthetic Oil before storage. I was just reviewing my owners manual and it says to use Mineral Injection Oil.

Should I be draining my reservoir dry and refilling it with the Mineral Oil or do you think I'll be ok...?

Define "topped up". How much did you put in there? That will dictate my answer.

Mineral injection oil is the minimum, you can do better than the minimum by using synthetic if you want, but it is not necessary on the fanner. Mixing of oil types is not a good thing, but from my observation, the fan cooled engines can take a lot of "adversity" LOL.

Approx. 1/2 the resivoir. So just to confirm (I'm new to this whole owning/ maintaining ANYTHING) it doesn't really matter which oil I use as long as I'm consistent? Mineral oil is fine but Synthetic is better...?

In general, yes. Personally, I wouldn't waste my money on synthetic for a fan cooled engine. Due to the nature of the cooling system, the engine runs hotter and the tolerances are not as tight as in a LC engine, so a good TC-W3 oil will usually do the trick.

You will probably have 20 different people respond with 20 different answers since everybody seems to have their own opinions on oil. My opinion has been derived from over 50k km's on fan cooled engines in the past 10 years and for me, Castrol Super Snowmobile Oil from Wal-Mart has been sufficient for fanners and is priced reasonably.

LB is right and mixing them won't hurt either. I ran the Doo mixed for a while in my fan but I am back to mineral.

x2 on the castrol stays smooth down to -40

What oil are you using in your v800 now that you have changed over to a LC engine. Are you using a Walmart
brand?

No, Yamaha or BRP 0W40. The Yamaha 0W40 is real nice and a little bit cheaper than the BRP stuff. Castrol Syntec (available at Wal-Mart) 0W30 is pretty good and would probably work fine, but if the sled calls for a 40 weight on the hot side, I figure I'd better go with it.
