GREENVILLE (NEWS CENTER 6) -- Maine game wardens are looking for a couple from Pennsylvania who went snowmobiling Thursday and haven't been seen since.

41-year-old Clifford Achenbach and 42-year-old Denise Achenbach of Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, were reported missing Monday morning after they did not report to work.

Twelve game wardens are using the warden service's two aircraft and the Maine Forest Service's helicopter to look for the couple. Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife spokesperson Deb Turcotte said the wardens are concerned because of the number of lakes, outlets and streams in the area and that the water is starting to open.

She said the Achenbachs had told the hotel attendant that they had ridden to Pittston Farm and North East Carry, and they intended to ride off trails.

The two checked into Moose Mountain Inn on March 16 and were planning on staying until March 21.

Clifford is described as being 6'2", approximately 170 pounds, with dark reddish hair and brown eyes. Denise is described as being 5'8", approximately 140 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes.

They were riding a red 2009 Polaris and green 2007 Arctic Cat. Anyone with information is asked to call the Piscataquis County Sheriff's Department at 1-800-432-7372.

GREENVILLE (NEWS CENTER) -- Maine Game Wardens found the bodies of two snowmobilers Monday afternoon in the east outlet section of Moosehead Lake. The couple was from Pennsylvania.

The family of 41-year-old Clifford Achenbach and 42-year-old Denise Achenbach of Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, reported them missing Monday morning when they did not return home.

They could also see one of their sleds in shallow water. Dorian said it was apparent the couple had been in the water for some time.

Don't know about you but I'd like to think that most of us here on DooTalk are smart enough not to go out on an unfamiliar body of water especially at night. These people weren't familiar with the area at all by the accounts the media is portraying. They said that they had a done a lot or research on the area but evedently not enough.

For those of you that aren't familiar with the Lake look at a map of the state of ME. and see just how big it is. It's 40 miles long and 20 miles wide at it's widest point and over 280 ft. deep in it's deepest spot. It's not your average lake.

It's failrly apparent by the media accounts that these people must have been out riding for most of the day. My guess is that they decided to take the "easy" way out and run the lake back to their Motel which is located a short distance from the shore. It seems from what they (ME. wardens) are describing the couple must have been running the shore down the west side of the lake at night back to their Motel which is on the West Shore as well. The East Outlet is a notorious trouble area and is even marked as such on the local trail map. There is a place called Wilson's on Moosehead that is on the South side of the outlet and is on a highly visible point that unfortunately lies on the opposite side of the opening and people that run the shore and aren't familiar with the area tend to aim for it as a beacon at night and unfortunately for the unknowing it draws them right into trouble.

I have had a camp in this general area for 4 years and am very familiar with the area and still wouldn't do what they attempted to do and this was their first trip to the area.

The sad part about this tragedy is that this was easily preventable and it was easily prevented by the victims themselves.

My husband and I had this conversation last night. He would NEVER go on lakes at this time of year, anywhere. He is very cautious when it comes to riding, lakes, etc. He also is not in favor of riding on lakes or bodies of water he is not familiar with. I was just saying snowmobile accidents can happen anytime to any one of us, since it's something we all have in common. (I also didn't want a comment like I was thinking start a chain of posts bashing this couple who have passed away). You know how it is BDD...

I'm not trying to besmirtch the couple or belittle their deaths, I'm just trying to point out that this is more of a case of Darwins theroy than it is an accident. IMO and accident is when a deer jumps out in front of you or another rider drifts too far across the center of a corner. wink.gif

My condolences as well. sad, sad story. It was covered by our ABC news affiliate here in Phila last nite.

I too have been riding that area for 18 years now and always respect that lake, while I admitt parking my sled at the face of Kineo (deepest part of the lake) I stay away from the outlets around Rockwood and the notorious shore points around Deer and Sugar island.
Grip N Rip
Very sad. My condolenses.
