Me, SkinnyDoo and XPS2Gade are looking for a fourth to go riding with us (and share the costs). We're leaving the morning of Saturday, March 7, returning Wednesday, March 11 from the Ann Arbor and also the Lansing area. We plan on riding all bockwoods in the Grand Marais/Pine Stump/Paradise area. We WILL NOT be riding trails! So, be prepared to ride in tight trees, open fields, up and down hills. Your sled WILL get scratched. You'll need your own shovel, saw and backpack. We're still working out accomodations. If you're interested in one hell of a good riding experience, PM REVDOG or SkinnyDoo.
edit* accomodations are nice and only 100.00 total for all four nights.

I'll be up there during that time as well. Im curious why you would need your OWN shovel and saw though? Doesnt your group split up a little of the who carries what?

its a good idea to be prepared yourself. most people that ride the back country have equipment to do such. if you dont think you need it by all means dont carry it.

Oh I'd carry it, but it sounded like everybody has to carry there own which brought about my question.
In a group I only see the need for one saw and one shovel thats all.
I love your disclaimer about "getting your sled scratched" I hate taking those chromed up hot rodders off trail and listening to them complain all day.

Sometimes, one saw will break, sometimes one saw is not big enough for the tree. Multiple shovels are needed to save time; you have not seen a sled buried until you have ridden with Mike!
Actually I would suggest carrying a small chain saw, several feet of rope and a small block and pulleys. Not much room for anything else in the back pack, save a candy bar or two. Would suggest large piece of canvas for shelter in cae of being out overnight!
Kinda sounds like your looking for a brushing crew.

but need to save enough room in your pack for lunch. we wont be heading out of the wood to eat. hmm chain saw. that would be to easy. but rest assured we will be back to the cabin before dark

Skinnydoo contacted me about this trip but I made previous plans and will be up in the Soo at that time.I am leaving this Thurs 5th till probably the end of March some time....(layed off)
I have ridden with Jeff once before,he is a great guy to ride with and I am sure the others in this group are the same.

Ah, the backwoods riding. As far as a shovel for everyone.....yeah.... I remember a couple times wait at least once a day when all of us in the group have been stuck at the same time.

The saw deal is always a good idea. No telling when you need to make a dead fall to catch your dinner.

I suggest a snobunje as they are the real time & back saver.
Going to be a fun one.

They're probably afraid to scratch they're sleds!

If Dan and I weren't already going to GM this weekend, I'd probably have looked into going with you guys.

DO NOT fall into the Dogs trap!!! He is simply looking for someone to help dig his junk out of the nastiest situations he can possibly get himself into! His riding skills have still got nothing on his imagination, he will be stuck, numerous times! His current riding group will no longer pull him out, they simply cannot say no to tagging along, once you see it first hand you can't get enough! Again, this is only a plea for help!! Your back will thank me later, you are all welcome!

Would love to. Can't this weekend.
I'm taking 3/13 & 3/16 off along with 3/27 & 3/30 for a couple long weekends to hopefully ride up there.
If those dates work, lemme know. Maybe we can set something up. I don't like to carry much baggage with me riding. Just usually my gas can on the back and some rope and then whatever I can fit in the compartment. I just don't like the feel of a backpack on. If anything just a camelback on. If you don't like that I understand. I don't mind getting stuck - especially with the thick air here in MI. It is much easier compared to being at 10,000 feet.

Buffy....Your no 'off trail' rider unless you have a shovel and a saw on board

...One per group??? What happens when the group can't get to you? Or refuses to!? LOL I needed mine the day you rode w/me...But used my hands instead....The saw is a very nice thing to carry in the tunnel bag as well!

It was nice dining with you revdog, but riding is another story I hear???
Believe it or not, we are riding Traverse City in the morning!
Took these pics tonight, we took the truck to check out the trail area and it is a go for us. We rode Wed. night and it was very good. Will ride both on and off trail. Still lots of snow when you get out of the main highway areas.
This is a dirt road we were on, and then a trail crossing. Should be fun and beats sitting home.
Planning on going to the U.P. next weekend.
Have fun & be careful.
