We're planning on parking in Rangeley Sunday morning (02/15/09) and doing the black fly loop. With all the rain, I'm looking on getting some info on the trail conditions for these areas.

For those not familiar with the black-fly loop, its the best scenic day-trip i've ever done: Rangeley -> Eustis -> Carrabassett Valley -> Philips -> Rangeley

And info on trail conditions since the rain would be awesome. Thanks.

Four of us ended up going. Here is what we found:

ITS 84 CLOSED: There is a section of ITS 84 closed. We can into some folks we know who tried to go that way in the morning and had to turn around. The could not get from Kingfield to Rangeley without going back up through Carrabassett Valley.

Most of the trails were very hard. There was enough granular on top so that there were no cooling issues for my liquid cooled sled, even for the 4 mile stretch of plowed road between Rangeley and Stratton.

Some trails were very smooth. Others were very rough, not because they weren't groomable, but because they hadn't been groomed recently. The was very clear when we passed a groomer right next to Flagstaff Lake between Carrabassett and Stratton (Arnold Trail Snowmobile Club trail).

All-in-all, conditions were better (on average) than we expected.

ITS 84 in Phillips- This trail has been rerouted and you should see signs marking the reroute right where you leave our trail (there is a sign there) and enter those maintained by the North Franklin Club. The rerouting takes you in closer to Phillips and puts you back onto ITS 84 up by Salem and the General Store there.
