Snow Please
2005 MXZ Renegade X.

I went to start it this morning and it won't start with the electric start. I checked the battery and it's fine - fully charged. When I push the start button you can hear the starter turning but the motor is not engaging. No cranking of the motor sound just the sound of the starter.

I never had this problem before but one time while it was at Enns they said they had to charge the battery and after the charge they went to start it but it wouldn't start. I think they said a fuse blew. I don't know? I am not very mechanically inclined.

What fuses should I check and if so where would they be? I checked the fuse right on the battery and it was fine. I am not at the sled as I left the sled at the lake when I couldn't get it going. I DID NOT try starting it with the pull start - no time as I had to go.

I did have a small trickle charger (1 amp I think) on it last night as I wanted to keep the battery fresh as it ws cold at the lake. I have done this before. Also, I was using my sled every day for the past week with no problems.

Any help / thougths would be much appreciated...

I'd try posting this in the rev chassis performance model forum. My '05 600sdi has done this before but then if I try again, it usually engages. Not real sure what causes it. I'm not real sure how it works, but I'm thinking that the way the gear on the starter moves out is if it turns fast enough. So if the starter isn't turning fast enough, it wouldn't move out to engage with the ring gear. If I am correct (no idea if I am or not), it shouldn't be a fuse. The only thing I would suggest is using a voltmeter and holding the wires from it on the battery posts and then get someone to press the start button and see if the volts drop. I've heard that if it's below 12V when it's cranking, your battery is no good (this is for the sdi anyway.)

Hope this helps.

More than likely the teeth are worn on your starter!
05/06 and even the newer models have an issue of having the starter gear walk over due to harmonics and wear against the ring gear!
Replace the gear, spring, and clean and lube the throwout shaft with graphite, and you'll be good to go!

Thank you everyone for your help. Seems to be working again - for now. We pull started it to get it going and once it warmed up it seems the electric start is working again. I am going to have the battery checked out and the starter gear.

Your starter probably just froze up. You could hear your starter spinning but it wasn't throwing out the starter drive gear. Once you warmed up you sled you thawed out the starter drive.

that would be my guess too....

parked it the night before with powder underhood?

IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN THERE IS PROBABLY BELT DUST AND CRAP ON THE ARMATURE SHAFT.THIS STUFF WILL PREVENT THE DRIVE FROM COMING OUT AS IT WORKS ON INERTIA.TRY CLEANING IT UP WITH SOME BRAKE CLEAN.
