went out for first ride of season last week and she locked up instantly and had to break crank free with .5" breaker bar. second, i started it up and there was a loud rap on clutch side of motor. third, i took apart the motor metal shavings down in crankcase of num1 and num2 cylinders. I know it's a problem with triples and it's going to shop tom for at least 2 bearings or should i get all replaced $. finally doing a complete top end rebuild. any comments would be appreciated. thanx

I'm curious as to what you do to lay your motor up for the summer.

Take your crank into someone who knows what there doing and let them check the bearings. I've done several motors where the pto bearing have had to be replaced only, but I leave it up to my crank guy to tell me what needs to be done.

I see after all the posts on DT and work you have put into your sled. You're selling it?

thanx for the input everyone about the crankcase! First, it took the shop 4 weeks to complete a lower crankcase rebuild, "edit for bad language" that was a long wait! yep i kept bugging them and 1 guy only does machine work.Second the total bill was $1030.81 plus i rebuilt the upper end with wieco pistons, rings and gasket kit. Screw it it's my pride and joy! Installed and everything went smooth except for oil cable hook up then fired it up. Third, I ran it at idle for 10 minutes rode it lightly and after a few miles the clutch cut loose and i lost a shoe slider but hours after i found it. Finally, after putting the clutch back on what is the torque for the bolt? O yeah the guy who asked about the summer storage yes i think it played into a part with my blown crank

And I see you put Wiseco pistons in it, bad move.
You will be tossing them out and installing OEM very soon.

Wiesco's need a bunch of warm up, other than that they're ok. Lot's of racers have run em with success as well as several "spirited" trail animals. Trust me, the warm up is the key to long life with a forged piston. The piston to wall is greater than with a cast or OEM piston, and the expansion rate of a forged piston is also greater hence the need for a good warm up. Don't get on it until you see temp on the gauge.

you can get a reman crank right from bombardier for $511 retail, part number 421000156. this has the updated pto bearing setup and the isoflex grease etc., iirc. i think it even comes with a warranty?

i just got the remanufactured crank from bombardier last january and it was $711 canadian after the $200 core refund from the old crank. comes with a year of warranty and yes, the updated pto. and i made sure on the isoflex as well. not too worried about the crank as i managed to get 9500 miles out of the original one which was supposed to blow up after 3000 miles. well, atleast that's what some people told me. must have been the shell mineral oil that i paid $16 for 4 litres that let it run well for those 9499 good miles. ha.

Crank-Works in Arizona! Torn down, inspected, cleaned and polished. Trued to .001 across bearing surfaces and then welded welded for about $500 parts and labor included.
