I am thinking of trying the Trout Lake area over New Years as oppose to Newberry. Never been to this area, so how are the trails?
Any suggestions as to where to stay?

I drove through Trout Lake Sunday on my way home from Seney-Newberry. They have a bunch of snow. They had not groomed yet, but they probably are by now.
There is a large motel just outside of town, do a search and you can find the name, it has changed owners/names a couple of times. Also depending on how many people you have there is lodging in town over some of the store fronts, call the Buckhorn bar, they can help and it is a fun bar.

Well I'll tell you my past experiences. In 06 we talked to some guys just outside of Trout Lake, and they said "take these power lines to bypass all the crappy trails through Trout Lake", so we did. Now, just last winter we went through Trout Lake. BUMPY AS HECK!!!!!! I do NOT like Trout Lake lol. Maybe just went at the wrong time? Who knows.

Great riding around Trout Lake...they do not get the traffic and as said the Buckhorn has the best Olive burger anywhere...
As far as the post about bumps this is a Doo site...smooth trails are for other bran sleds eh..
Good area...I also drove by the last couple weekends and they have a good amount of snow.

McGowans right in town by the bars is a good place to stay. Clean rooms right on the trail, next to bars (oh ya the buckhern can but lots of fun) and gas bout 1/2 mile down da road. Have to call ahead of time though, sometimes there is no one around late, but bar might be able to hook you up with the owner to get a room. Trails are excellent 'round there this time a year. Can be rough early in da season b/c of swamp close to town. Lotsa off trail riding for the taking too. McGowans Restaurant (think same #) (906) 569-3366.

Don't stay at the Castle Inn. Or whatever its called now. Its a dump with no hot water.

I heard McGowan's is ok, but they are crazy with their food prices.

The trails are always bumpy right in Trout Lake. I've never been there when they are smooth.

We have family that lives just South of Trout Lake, thats where we stay now.

If not we stay at Yogi's cabins, right on Frenchman lake. Cheap, two beds fridge and stove can't beat it.

We went up to Trout Lake four years ago for New Years and stayed the first night of the trip in Castle Inn or what ever it is called now and I agree it is a dump. After the first night we moved to Yogi's cabins. I agree good place to stay that is cheap. Don't really remember the trails being really bumpy, but there were bumps here and there. On the first night we were there I fell through a swamp about knee deep. What happened was a groomer fell through the swap earlier in the day but the hotel never told anyone that it happened and no caution signs or anything were posted. Luckily I was on a small Yamaha Bravo so it was not to difficult to get the sled out, but it still took my Dad and I some good time to dig it out. Spent the next few hours at the dryers getting ours clothes dried out.

I,ve rode the trout lake area several times, the only bumps i experienced were a short run in and out of town. Also the food i got was great at Mc Gowans,it wasn,t cheap but not rediculous.

Might be a little "dirty" right now

J.K.

I think once you get out of town a little it is good normally in the season......

I`d say without question try SNO SHU INN ,its in Hulbert 11 miles from Trout Lake ,Marg is great and will treat you right. Plus at the end of the day Shirley`s Happy Hour is just down the road if you`ve worked up a thrist.
