Winter storm warning for
Fort McMurray - Fort MacKay continued

Heavy snow and local blowing snow expected to develop overnight and continue on Saturday.

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions...Listen for updated statements.

An intense low pressure system fueled by moist pacific air is expected to move across Alberta on Saturday bringing snow and blowing snow to northern Alberta.

As the system develops significant snowfall will occur over the Peace River and Grande Prairie regions overnight and spread into the Wabasca Slave Lake and Fort McMurray regions Saturday. A total of 10 centimetres of snow can be expected by Saturday evening. In addition a cold front associated with the low pressure system will move quickly southward behind the low bringing strong northerly winds and locally reduced visibility in blowing snow.

The cold front will also herald the return of Arctic air with cold temperatures and high wind chills expected for Sunday.

This winter storm can produce poor travelling conditions. Persons in or near these areas should be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and listen for updated warnings.

Other areas are affected. Check http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/warnings/ab_e.html

Winter storm warning for
Fort McMurray - Fort MacKay continued

Heavy snow and low visibilities in blowing snow expected to continue this evening.

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions...Listen for updated statements.

The low pressure disturbance which tracked quickly across Alberta today has moved into central Saskatchewan. A trough of low pressure extends northwestwards from the low towards Fort Chipewyan. Areas west of the trough including the Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan regions continue to receive significant snowfall and may see up to 5 centimetres of further accumulation locally this evening. Brisk northwest winds in behind the low and trough are giving local blowing and drifting snow especially in exposed areas. In addition the passage of the low will herald the return of cold Arctic air as a ridge of high pressure builds southward into Alberta from the nwt. Significant snowfall should end this evening as the low continues to move eastward however winds will remain brisk northerly until Sunday morning.

Although light snow and brisk northerly winds giving local blowing or drifting snow is still occurring in the High Level and Wabasca regions conditions have improved sufficiently to end the warning. Winds in these areas should diminish to light overnight.

This winter storm can produce poor travelling conditions. Persons in or near these areas should be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and listen for updated warnings.
