I figure this is my best chance to do it. Especially with the winter storm for the Mackinac area too. Plenty of snow in the lower right now!
I have gone to Boyne before and I know I can get to the bridge and call bridge authority to get me over to St Iggy. I am wondering what would be the best way to take after that.
1. to trout lake then down thru curtis and over then up to seney up and and back down 8
2. stay south by Naubinway then to blaney park and then shoot up to m-28 and take that the rest of the way to wetmore
3. or to trout lake - newberry - by reds wolf inn and to seney - then back up and back down to wetmore.
Hmmm.
Anyone want to go?
I am thinking 400 miles -ish...........
If I do this, it will be Friday if I can get the day off.......
Anyone want to sponsor me

I think option 3 would be the quickest.

I will be leaving St. Ignace on Friday morning and heading up to trout lake then west going south of newberry and stay north of Curtis. Go til the trail ends then ride the edge of the road thru Helmer to trail 43 then north to Seney. From there head to 8 and over to the Americ Inn in Wetmore. Have done this many times its right around 100 miles to Seney then 55 to Wetmore.

What John said. When there's good snow cover this short cut is nice because it gets you to the awesome Seney and Grand Marais trails so much quicker.

Thanks Newman. I seen that route on the trail map. I will go that way. Should be real nice with the snow coming tonight for that area....
So only 155 miles from St Iggy to Wetmore, eh? Not too bad. I forget what it was to the bridge from my house but I think this will be possible. The plan is tomorrow morning. the 5-10" coming in Cadillac area will be real nice to jump from onetrail system to the other (cadillac - Manton).
Wish me luck!

Man John, that is exactly what I was going to say. Jump on the big lake in Helmer and run that over, puts you out right by the trail into
Seney!

Sweet. I made it. I had dinner at the Bear Trap. I wanted to make this trip. House to my property. about 370 miles.
That shortcut thru Helmer worked great. Not so forgiving on the shoulders but the ditches were good.
I ended up coming back to Newberry to meet my girlfriend here so she would not have to drive as far. That made it about 460 for the day for me.
Thanks again for the shortcut info.

Dude... You're describing my dream ride... I'd love to go on a ride like that.. I was in Copper Harbor this summer, and everywhere you go you cross the trails where they cross the roads. I kept seeing them and thinking I'm going to have to get up here on the sled. I think it'll have to wait though. I'd like to have a little newer equipment, and with the wife working and having two small kids at home my time is extremely limited. A couple more years and the kids will be old enough to stay home or maybe even go with. But keep posting because even though the timing doesn't work out for a lot of guys to go, we love to hear about it !!

Well, I would like to plan this again.
Cabowabokjb - you in this year?
Would love to go further - I just wanted to make it to my property this first time.
((thanks again newm316 for that shortcut - that was nice))
Snow is still decent by home here in Big Rapids. I am thinking it might have to wait until the end of next month if it is even possible then. I will be hoping for a nice storm to get fresh stuff on a weekday and takeoff then so there is not much traffic.
Let me know anyone's thoughts on going. When and where.....
I am planning on the Soo I-500. Maybe could ride to that......
Let it snow!!!!
Shooting to TUT this weekend - I hope the trails are still OK !!!!
Let it snow!

I could get you through Cadillac and connected to the Kalkaska trails. It'd be a lot of two track and road riding though.

Gimmie your email I will show you a nice way thru. yes - two tracks and sides of roads but the few times I have done it - it was decent.... it gets me to the Manton trailhead. From Kalkaska to Mancelona I just took sides of roads - I think I got lost everytime but somehow found my way - it wasn't hard cause the sides of roads were so snow covered. got to love that snowbelt!
I have gone to Higgins Lake a few times from home along with this trip and up to Boyne. It works well............
Yeah Early Feb i will be going to the Soo I-500 race. I really want to go on the trip from the Soo to Tok Alaska like a group is doing this year. I can't get the time off work. Maybe next year..........plus I don't think they want me to go with the miles I have on my sled
but yeah maybe Feb.
I usually kind of wing it as I wait for the weather to be nice. Like the day of or day after a nice storm that dumps plenty of snow!

Most of the roads have decent ditches to ride. Just remember that you can't ride the side of M-115 or any other M-state highway, ditches or anything.

josh, didn't see a PM from ya.
revrdr4evr - I'll get ya my "map" too. I need your email.....
remember that you can't ride the side of M-115 or any other M-state highway, ditches or anything.Yeah I still don't understand the "M" roads...........I thought you could still ride "off the shoulder" unless there was a bridge to cross - then you could use the shoulder.
-We ride from Dingmans into Grayling quite a few times right along M-72.......
-Got pulled over before in the UP from a DNR blazer (missing a headlight) and told them we were gimping back cause one sled had a messed up rear suspension. He just didn't like the one sled ride on the side of the road.
-the trail from Miner's castle back to Munising goes along M-28 for a little bit. and actually some people keep taking the side (off the shoulder) of M-28 all the way back into Wetmore. Especially to get back to the one hotel I can't think of the name of. Where ski-doo days usually is/was.....I see ALOT of people ride that.
Well, enoguh about that - I think there are other posts for that.
Anyway, I'll get ya the map, Make me one up of what you got revrdr4ev. I'd like to have options!

you can ride on the
unplowed sides and rite-a-way ditches of "M" roads. not the
plowed part of "M" and "I" roads though.
