Milford here- my 600SDI just arrived, hoping to learn what/where/how good the trails are around Spencer and west.
I am a newer rider (2 seasons-500 miles or so) and ride with a buddy in Western MA-Pittsfield/Otis area-where he knows the trails....I will definitely be out there, but for when time is tighter, hoping to learn about some areas a little closer to Milford. I also have a friend in Milford who has a new Rev, and is very experienced, looking for the same, as he has been doing most of his riding in Maine.
Any advice?

Im over in franklin and used to doo a lot of 4 wheeling up in Vietnam off of the power lines no sure how much is left up there been a few years. Just watch those trails lots of big rocks. I dont do to much local riding anymore doo to the popo late night street runs and little in the pits by my house. I have a friend in Athol we were out in his jeep last weekend and the trails in the western part of the stare look good and from what i hear is they groom the as well.

Welcome!

There are plenty of places to ride in Ma, just have to be able to travel. Here is a link to the SAM website, should provide you with plenty of information on clubs, events, etc.

website

I belong to a local club in West Boylston and we ride in central Ma up to Southern NH. It's about an 70 mile trip, not bad for local riding. I mostly ride in Pittsburg, NH and central/Northern ME.

Any other questions, ask away.

Hey Ice-
Specer Snowbirds? Thats the area I am trying to figure out.....I am a club member, and SAM member, but the maps leave a bit to be desired for the Central MA area.....can't really figure out where to go to park, ride, etc...Far Western MA I am all set with, and thats a day trip for me, but thinking maybe if I get to know the Central area I can squeeze in a afternoon somewhere-
Thanks-
Dave

Nope, Snowmobilers United.

The 70 mile ride I was talking about is off of 122 in Rutland. It's an abandoned railroad bed that crosses over several Routes and leads up into Fitzwilliam, NH. It's trail 71 on the 2007 SAM trail map.

The Spencer club trails hook up with the main corridor on the Coldbrook club system which takes you into NH. As long as there's snow there's no need to trailer all the way to the 122 rail trail head, but you could do that too. The Coldbrook club has some of the best riding you will find in the entire state...if there's snow. The club also produced new maps last year that will get you from the Spencer system. I would suggest joining the Coldbrook club, they have a web site http://www.coldbrooksnowmobilers.com/
You can join from there.

I'm from Palmer, MA and have been a member for the past 5 years or so. A good portion of the trails are abandon rail beds and state park fire roads which are groomed by state-of-the-art machines as much as is practical. When groomed it's just as good as northern NH. I ride the Pittsburg, NH systems every year as well.

Trail 71 is the main corridor through the Coldbrook system which ends at Winconden Rod and Gun club just north of Lake Dennison State Park. The trail continues, via road side, into NH and junctions with a rail bed trail in NH. Again, need a good snow pack to use the road side. Also, there has been some logging on the connector trail into NH that required a re-route which is pretty rough still.

Thanks Limited! I may be joining more than one club this year for the information.....I do not mind throwing 40$ at a club when they are mainatining the systems we ride on.....and that way I can learn these MA systems.
Here is to PRAYING for SNOW this year.
I will get to Rangley ME this year at least 2x, but with family (kid) obligations and budget, going to ME more than that is tough to do.....a day trip in state is much more practicle most days for now.

Yeah, the beginning of Trail 71 in Rutland is dedicated to my grand father who was has put many of long hours into maintaining that trail for our club. He passed away and we dedicated it in his honor. Unfortunately, the plaques had to be removed because people have destroyed them. It's sad.....

We actually were out last Sunday trail clearing this trail. We started at Rte. 62 and worked backwards to Rte. 122. Not done yet but maybe we'll be out next Sunday.

Thanks for the info.

I was out this past Sunday with the crew clearing the railbed from 122 north. We did about a mile and a quarter with only about another 1/4 to go. Likely be back out again next Sunday to finish it. I helped do the south section next to the Barre land fill about 2 or 3 years ago, that was a mess, it's still a bit rough. I haven't heard about any work to fix the annual flooding problem under the train bridge near Baldwinville. That always screws things up and makes a huge mess. Part of the problem is that it's wet a good portion of the year and all the quads and bikes beat the sh?t out of it.
