made plans to stay in the eastern U.P. day after Xmas til New Years Eve.... according to forecasts, warm weather and rain have dampened my hopes of a good time .... hoping for snow to fly before then ... have a question tho, can a guy ride from the U.P. down into northern Michigan on a sled??.. i see a highway goes over Lake Michigan, but wondering about sled travel... if not, i will just trailer down .... since i am out of state (IOWA rider), is the tag i get in the U.P. good if i travel down into northern Michigan ... dont want to get hassled by the law if i can help it ... if anyone is gonna be up that way around the same time, look for a black rev with #152 on the side .... the wife and I are on a short vacation ...

Trail permit is good for all of Michigan both upper and lower. You can get across the bridge by contacting the Mackinaw Bridge authority. They will meet you and transport you and your sleds across dropping you off at the trail for $10 per sled..

Where are you staying?

Yup....I've done this several times....just don't expect them to act real fast to help you out. One of the times, we had to wait like a half hour or so for them to come load our sleds to get across the bridge.

This was the info I found at the time when I used the service a couple years ago....not sure if it's changed....

"The Mackinac Bridge Authority will transport snowmobiles across the structure at a cost of $10 per sled one way, plus $2 for each additional rider. The service is provided daily from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and is offered on an "on call" basis.

The designated loading areas are the Travel Information Center on Nicolet Street in Mackinaw City and on Service Drive immediately north of US-2 in St. Ignace. Please call the Mackinac Bridge Authority at 906-643-7600 to arrange for pick-up. Customers will be required to sign a liability waiver form before utilizing the service"

Go to the Shell station on U.S. 2, just east of 75 we went there last year and told them what we needed and they called the bridge authority for us. It was real easy. biggrin.gif

If the ice is good just take that to lower MI, that or sneak up the the toll booth, get past them by faking you are lost and want to turn around, then punch it and get to the other side, it is a few miles so you can be there in minutes, just stay off the steel grates, they can hook a carbide and throw you off the bridge, no big deal, just hit the water at full throttle and you will take off, depending on which way you are facing when you land you should be heading South. If this "scares" you, then waste the $10 and the time for them to get there...hey, it's your money, piss it away if you want. biggrin.gif
