ok so ive already fouled 2 sets of plugs on my 97 mach z 800 this year and i havent even rode it yet. the frist set was a used set but the second was brand new! both were br9es are they the recommended plug for this engine? would a different plug work better? i run 93 octane in it . maybe it wont foul when im hammering the throttle on the trails but i want to fix the problem before im on the trail changing plugs ever 10 miles. thanks!

br9es plugs should be fine. im not sure on your 97 mach, but most sleds are jetted a bit rich from factory, and tend to flood foul plugs if they are idled alot, or not run hard enough to sort of "clean out" the engine. My bud has a 97 f-III and i have my 99 Mach-z, we both dropped the pilot jets down 1 size leaner than factory and opened the idle air screws 1/2 turn more than factory settings. this has greatly reduced the likelyhood and frequency of our sleds wet fouling plugs if the sled idles for more than a few seconds. some of the newer twins arent so fussy, but in my experience, the old triples with triple pipes seemed to be more sensative to this. the adjustments we made only effect idle to 1/4 throttle, (which is where the issue seemed most prevalant) and have not produced any negative or undesireable results. but yeah, if you have only run it on the stand a couple times, or run it for a short time not giving the engine and pipes a chance to really get heated up, you are running a better chance of biffing plugs. i wouldnt worry too much about it at this point. but JIC, run a compression test. you should be around 130psi across all 3. also, be sure you dont have a sticking choke/chokes. that would definately wet foul plugs in a hurry too. hope this helps you out

The recommended plug gap is .018

Is the gas from last year? I had the same problem with my sled two years in a row. The first time I run the sled with what ever was left in the tank, fouled at least one plug.
Put some fresh gas in it after changing the plugs and it's good to go.

yep i have a 95 mach z all stock with 1064 miles on her, and i dropped the pilots down one size and a half turn out on the air a couple weeks ago. i never had fouling problems, she was just a little sluggish stabbin the throttle from idle. i would have to say that this adjustment is about a 10% improvement. it was about 48 that day. will just have to wait and see how she acts when its 30deg. cooler.

x2 ... if you foul plugs when riding then you need to do something but it's easy to foul them from idling too long on the stand.

Do all three of Donny's suggestions and your plug fouling days will be over! right_on.gif
