Or do I have to make some mods to this thing to compete? Mikadoo mentioned to me I may want to look into gearing. If I don't have to change anything I'd rather not this year, but If I need to change the gears that's easy for me. I'm not very experienced with clutching..so I'm unsure about that. I was also looking at putting the carbon tech reeds on....foir 130$ theyr supposed to give a 3 HP midrange increase?

Any help guys so I can show up the twins? thanks

why is everyone afraid to run race gas.

what's the big deal we were paying what 4 dollars a gallon 2 years ago, what's another 2 dollars a gallon. But everyone wants to de-tune there beautiful running mods so they can save what 200$ a year??????? I've never had a sled on race gas burn and i've had 3 over the last 5 years. and did have a pump gas sled burn down. so in my experience the whole "reliability" argument is out the window. These sleds were made to generate big power and people should start growing some balls and making these sled perform to there potential. And if you are on the fence about buying one.....you won't regret it.

I was having problems last year when riding in deep powder. The snow would find its way up under the hood and pack in around the muffler. Got to looking for a solution today and this is what I came up with. Last winter I bought a 2x4 piece of Kydex plastic. It is about a 1/16th of an inch thick and cuts easily with heavy duty shears. It is very workable with a heat gun.

Here is the problem

There is a large gap underneath the hood that allows snow to enter.
Kydex

I cut a 1 inch strip about 20 inches long. Put a 90 degree bend in the middle and trimmed the ends

Four pop rivits and voila!

No more gap
Kydex is great material to work with and you can make all kinds of helpful items for yourself like this intake deflector.

I didn't really know what to say as I was very interested in doing it.

I told them I would get back to them.

When I got home I phoned Randy and told him....he said and you said NO right! I said. actually I was considering doing it. He was SHOCKED!!

Is it wrong for me to be considering it?? Am I too old?? I am flattered to be asked should I just leave it at that??

What say you all my fellow sledders??

hey,

Im taking my sled out west in a couple weeks, so i need a high elevation set-up for my factory BMRT mod, I Plan to run the high comp heads and race gas at least until i get back from the mountains. I did some searching and came up with nothing..

I would also very much appreciate a set up for the mod at low elevations as well, so i can do some testing before i leave. It has 310's in it now, Im assuming thats pretty lean for a mod seeing as it was raced before i picked it up.

It has in it now;

310 mains
50 pilots
150 powerjet
needle 3rd clip from top
Airscrew One turn out

cant tell you right now what it has in it for clutching but i can find out if necessary.

Im coming off a stocker rs so any information about mods and mod set ups is greatly appreciated..

A good starting point with main jets, needle position, pilot jet, and some light clutching would be great!

Thanks

A buddy and I were talking about stocking up on some common parts that may break or go missing during a ride. We will be doing quite a bit of riding away from home this year and will not have access to parts all the time.
We were thinking about buying a variety of bolts that fit different parts on the sled, as well as any other parts that a guy can easily buy and keep on hand in case something happens.

Does anyone else do this? If so, I would love to see a list of what you have. Once I get a good list compiled, I will head down to Doo and buy it. Then, hopefully, a trip won't get ruined by a sheered off bolt or something similar.
I understand that I can't carry everything, but just maybe some suggestions on basics.
Thanks.

I just started my 440/600HO project for the first time. I let it run on the stand for a little while, while I checked everything over. When I was done I did a compression check and both cylinders were in the 155-160 psi range. I am running a 600 MOD head cut down for pump gas. Is that compression to high to be running 91-93 octane fuel or am I OK?

My turn for help (no spark)

Here's the deal.
My buddies 99 FIII 700
Sled ran just fine when I fogged it for storage last spring. It sat covered in his heated garage all summer until we brought it to my house so I could replace a bad base gasket for him. we knew it was bad near the end of last season but all the same, it ran fine.

So I replaced all the top end gaskets, pulled it to start it for the first time this season and it wont start.
It's getting fuel (I know because all the plugs are now wet).
I checked for spark and there isn't even a hint of power at any of the three cylinders???? *scratching head*
(I even did the electricute myself test on each cylinder by sticking a screw driver in each plug cap and held the metal as my buddy pulled like a mad man "giggling his a$$ of waiting for me to jump...

Now anyone who's taken the top end off one of these things know that there's nothing electrical touched in the process unless you count the coolant temp sensor as electrical.

To me, I'd say the stator pooped out but wouldn't that be an odd coinsidence??? I'll remove the darn thing if I can't find anything else but I just think it's odd that that it could go bad just sitting there.

Anyone?? I'm not thinking too well at this time. As most of you know, one hour work on a sled equals four beer and I've been at it for three hours...*hickup*

Sounds like this site that the teen is getting help from would be like Doo Talk.
Great people on this site(DooTalk).

Strangers help dying teen overhaul his pride and joy!

FRAZEE, Minn. – Tyler Shipman will never have a wedding. But this weekend, the 18-year-old will see one of the loves of his life dolled up like never before.

Close family and friends will attend.

Pictures will be taken.

And about 20 strangers from as far away as Florida and California will give a makeover to the rural Frazee teen’s pride and joy: a 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT.

The effort began Oct. 29 when Shipman, who was stuck in a Fargo hospital at the time, asked for help on Pennock’s Fiero Forum, an Internet chat site for fans of the short-lived, two-seater sports car.

Shipman, a self-described “Fiero head,” said he always intended to restore his GT to mint condition.

His mission became more urgent when he learned a rare form of cancer called synovial sarcoma would cut his life short.

“I wanted to get it fixed up so I could drive it or at least ride in it when it was really nice, before anything happens,” he said. “And I figured that would be the place to go to ask for some kind of help, and things just started from there.”

The response was almost instantaneous.

By the next morning, a soldier in Iraq chatting as “Hulki U. My-BFF” had started a list of parts Shipman needed. Another forum member, “Synthesis,” from Inver Grove Heights, picked up the ball and kept it rolling.

As of a week ago, the forum’s thread for “The Tyler Project” was 44 pages long, with a list of 45 parts for the Fiero, ranging from window tint and turn signals to speakers and a leather shifter knob.

It also lists 34 donors who each gave $10 to $100 to overhaul a car owned by a skinny Minnesota kid they have never met in person.

“This is unbelievable,” said Dave Gray, owner of Frazee Auto Body & Glass, who is donating his shop space for the project. (Gray and his wife, Karen, also repainted the Fiero’s plastic body panels in an eye-popping color that Shipman is keeping a secret until this weekend.)

The show of support has overwhelmed Shipman and his parents, Jay and Daneele Shipman.

“They’ve donated everything under the sun for this car,” his father said.

Among those who’ll be working on the car in Frazee starting today is Kris Antuzzi, an 18-year-old from Auburn, Calif., who has four Fieros of his own. He’s bringing windshield wipers and a distributor.

“I had a friend go through cancer, and he did it alone. So, I just felt kind of obligated to make sure nobody else went through anything like that ever again,” Antuzzi said.

The Fiero forum members are a helpful bunch, he said, recalling how one member secured a place to live for another member who wrote that he had fallen on hard times. Antuzzi said a member he’s never met paid for his flight to Fargo Thursday.

“Everybody on there, they’re all a great group of people,” he said.

Tyler has been gleaning car tips from the forum since he bought his first Fiero at age 15.

Jay Shipman proudly describes his eldest son as a “total outdoorsman-type kid.” Pictures on Tyler’s CaringBridge site show him popping a wheelie on his motorcycle, holding a 29½-inch walleye and, of course, riding in his Fiero.

“Ever since he got his license, he’s kind of been into the Fiero thing,” his father said.

The Fiero is an acquired taste: Pontiac produced the car only from 1984 to 1988, and reviews were mixed.

In its list of “The Worst Cars of All Time,” Forbes.com called the Fiero “initially unreliable,” with Pontiac issuing 403 service bulletins on the 1984 model, plus a recall for engine fires. However, the blurb also noted the car was “quite good” by the end of its unprofitable run.

Tyler initially was drawn to the car “just ’cause of the motor in the back and everything, and not many people had them, and they were different and just kind of a cool car,” he said.

His first Fiero was an ’84 with a 4-cylinder engine. Two years ago, he bought the more muscular V-6 GT from a friend’s uncle.

“The car had been sitting in a field for probably six or seven years when I bought it,” he said. “It had moss growing on it. It was just nasty.”

The owner told him the engine was blown up, but Tyler said he went to work on it and found the problem to be minor. Within a few hours, he had the engine running, and he’s been driving it ever since.

Mid-summer, he started feeling back pain. His dad initially thought Tyler may have strained it while helping him out with his tree removal business.

After a series of tests and doctor visits, Tyler landed at MeritCare’s Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo. He spent 25 days there, but radiation and chemotherapy failed to stop the synovial sarcoma, which attacks the soft tissue that lines the cavities of joints, tendons and the fluid-filled cushioning sacs between tendons, ligaments and bones, according to the National Cancer Institute.

For Tyler, the Fiero project is a welcome distraction from the cancer that has spread from his spine to his hips, heart, lungs and femurs, giving him just months to live.

“It definitely keeps my mind off it,” he said. “This is all I talk about.”

His friend Nick Butze of Detroit Lakes, who has served as the contact point for people sending Fiero parts from far and wide, said Tyler is deserving of the support.

“Tyler’s a guy that’ll help anyone. He’s been a real hardworking kid for quite a while,” he said, noting Tyler also owns a truck for hauling potatoes.

Tyler, who has a 10-year-old brother and two sisters, ages 8 and 21, said the Fiero will remain in the family when he’s gone.

In the middle of the Shipmans’ living room sits a hospital bed. On the wall that faces Tyler, above the television and pictures of family and friends, hangs a brown rectangular sign with white lettering.

It reads: “Enjoy this moment … for this moment is your life.”

source,
http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/260270/

Compression question.....

I have read a bunch of other threads and websites on the subject so I understand about hot vs. cold and mag to pto...................

BUT how much compression is too low? If your cylinders are both within a 1 lb of each other still is there a threshold that would be too low compression?

was on dynotech this am and cranckshop has a package that puts out great power w/ a single pipe....though my personal opinion is that it would not live on pump gas when trail riding for very long over 170 hp....would be a blast on the lake though
