depends on wut your doing?
i'm racing 06-07 mxzx 440
i always change my tunnel protectors from the stock 1/4" to 3/4"
maybe i'm anal about having studs go through my tunnel.
protectors cost about $20 i believe.
small price to pay for tunnel protection.
this is just wut i do tho

does anyone else agree with me?

take off your snow flap and you might have to move your bumper too.
well i did on my 04 440 anyways.
the tracks that the protector slides in will be bent shut at the back.
open it up and switch them.

i'm not sure if they are a necessity if you don't run studs?
i've always run studs.

i did it on my 04, its not easy but it can be done. removing the bumper did help. thats how they do them at the dealership, when you buy a new sled those protectors don't come on it, they have to put them on if you want them. they def don't remove everything to get that done as the rivets holding the cooler on are the solid ones as you found out when you switched coolers.

true.. but for some reason only every seconde rivet where the solid ones? and i would put on the protectors but if i find out i dont need them i dont want to go threw the trouble putting them on, because im not planning on running studs

I just added a longer cooler to my 440/600. . . I put the protectors on after and it got me kinda frustrated. I ended up grinding alittle bit off the top of the two square openings to make more room to slide them up and in. . . after doing that it was a piece of cake.
